VISITFLANDERS is eager to promote the Flemish gastronomy and its delicious patrimony both nationally and internationally by yearly selecting young chefs and putting them in the spotlight under the name Flemish Kitchen Rebels.

For about two months (from beginning of October until 15th of November) these culinary wizards –all under the age of 35- with an insatiable passion for good food and locale produce offered a three-course menu from €45 to youngsters under the age of 30.

I’m an easy target when it comes to food. I love cooking, but I even more like going out dining. It came of no surprise then when one of my colleagues invited me to try out one of these restaurants, it instantly made my mouth water.  Our gastronomic sanctuary of choice was l’Epicerie du Cirque, owned by Dennis Broeckx and rewarded with 1 Michelin star.

Unlike my companion, this restaurant was not new to me. In the past, I was privileged a few times to have eaten here. I can easily bring every single one of these visits back to mind, vividly remembering subtle aromas and surprising textures, all combined in overwhelming tasteful explosions. Although slightly biased not being a food critic, I must admit they again exceeded my expectations. It was D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S !

The menu
L’Epicerie stands for a non-pretentious refined contemporary kitchen serving uncomplicated dishes with guts and power. We were in a treat with this promising menu:

Pumpkin/Vadouvan/Caraway
Plaice/Black Beans/Savoy
Cabbage Pheasant/Parsnip/Hazelnut
Passionfruit/Yoghurt/Pistachio
Tarte Tatin du Cirque

Unfortunately the Flemish Kitchen Rebels-action was only valid until 15th of November. The restaurant obviously stays open, with a 4-course dinner available from € 45. Rest assured, it’s worth every penny !

Flemish Food Bash in Antwerp
On Sunday November 16th, I found my way to Café d’Anvers for the Flemish Food Bash by Jong Keukengeweld, the closing night of the Flemish Kitchen Rebels. It was a delicious night out with fancy cocktails by famous bartenders, top food by exquisite chefs & funky music by Belgian & international dj’s.

Here’s an impression of this great event:
