Guest blog by Mariëlle Jongmans – wedding officer
It’s definitely possible: saying “I do” at a place where you feel comfortable, where you have an excellent atmosphere, the sun is shining, where nothing’s impossible and last but not least a place where you can enjoy city life close to the beach. Barcelona just has it all! And the distance is nearly negligible when living in Europe and if you want your family and friends to be present at your wedding. Trust me, nobody will complaint about celebrating your marriage in a fabulous city like Barcelona.
I know what I’m talking about since I performed several wedding ceremonies as an independent wedding officer in Barcelona (mostly Dutch couples). You can think of a couple renting a luxurious apartment and who invited 10 of their beloved relatives and friends to enjoy their wedding ceremony on a gigantic balcony with a spectacular view on the beach. I was also present at a wedding with a large amount of guests which took place just outside Barcelona. The bride and groom got married in this beautiful church at Poble Espanyol on the Montjuïc. It was not in the church yet in the monastery’s garden where they became husband and wife (Poble Espanyol is absolutely great if you want to experience how locals live in Catalonia).
There was another couple that organized a wedding in a beautiful hotel garden on Montjuïc with a stunning view on the harbor of Barcelona. Their guests enjoyed a delicious Spanish 10-course meal. And let’s not forget a wedding taking place on a hotel’s rooftop terrace at Las Ramblas where two handsome gentleman said “I will” to one another. After having a piece of delicious cake and cava (Barcelona has the most excellent bakeries), the couple went into town accompanied by their closest friends. Just outside Barcelona are wonderful locations to celebrate your wedding. I’d like to share this cute and colorful place called Sitges (half an hour drive from Barcelona). It has a beautiful palace which is perfect for weddings. Another location is Lloret del Mar where you’ll find a beautiful monastery ‘Sant pere del Bosc’ that has been turned into a small and charming hotel. Don’t you just love the idea to picking your own wedding location in a city like Barcelona? Everything’s possible and all you have to do is to enjoy to the fullest!
You can imagine I’ve been in Barcelona quite often and therefore I’d like to share some of my most favorite places while in town!
– Rent a bicycle, that’s way more fun than public transport. Barcelona is very adequate to cycle around. You can also choose an organized cycling tour to getting to know the city. I always book at a company called Cruising Barcelona which is owned by Dutch people. They rent our these cool beachcruiser bikes!
– Buy yourself a ticket to a performance at Palau de la Musica and enjoy the great acoustics and lovely music, but above all, the architecture of this unique theatre. Attending a performance is better than booking a tour: the building is more beautiful from the inside than the outside!
– I always stay at Fontanella Ramblas Rooms apartments while in Barcelona. The accommodation is very close to Plaza de Catalunya and centrally located.
-Choose an authentic lunch at the Barceloneta neighborhood where only locals are spotted: La Cova Fumada at Carrer del Baluard 56. You wouldn’t think this is an actual food place when you arrive before lunch time, however at 13:00 p.m. you can get in line to try some of the very delicious (fish) dishes and typical bites!
-Have a picnic at Font Mágica (Magic Fountains light show) in Monjuïc when night falls or look for a place just above the fountains so you can have the best view. Enjoy the music while being enchanted by the colors of the fountains. You’ll probably spot a gentleman getting on his knees to propose to his girlfriend since this is such a romantic place.
So what are you waiting for, visit Barcelona and let the city enchant you! And as you fall in love with the city, you may consider getting married here… who knows by me!?
